Salvador Dali once said," Drawing is the honesty of the art. There is no possibility of cheating. It's either good or bad." Despite the eccentric being of Dali, this statement is quite true, and the reality of it all is that anybody can learn to draw... . Yes, that means you too. Time, proper practice and dedication will yield results you would never imagine. But why learn to draw? It's inexpensive and can be done anywhere with little to carry along. What should I draw? People, nature, food,or anything you imagination can think of.
For beginning artist the next question is how do I draw? Which is a valid question because there's so many drawing supplies and papers to use,not including style and technique variations. However, for starters keep it simple don't overwhelm yourself with a perfect drawing the first time, keep it light and sketchy, learn to refine later, but most important learn the basics and you will see sooner or later that these principals are used in all drawing endeavors. To learn the basics, I'd suggest a book by Betty Edwards- The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain .
To start drawing, you will need the basics- pencils, sketch pad or book and erasers. Pencils come in various grades and hardness types. I suggest these pencils to start out with the Hb is the lightest pencil and the 2b is a great sketch pencil to start and develop your drawing because it's easy to erase. The 6b pencil will be reserved to add your darker darks later. Paper or sketch pads ought to be acid free. Canson is a great product and the size and shape of this pad with the spiral bound paper makes a perfect drawing support for lefties and right handed people. Erasers are needed to get a clean erase. I suggest a few types starting with a kneaded eraser also Generals Factis eraser work really well and combo pack of a kneaded eraser and Factis eraser can be purchased here.
My purpose for this post is to introduce you all to drawing, and keep in mind this is just the beginning and introduction to drawing with pencils. Happy drawing everybody, post your work here,or share you drawing tidbit.
